How many times have you heard a version of one of these?

  • Constantly surround yourself with the people who have the same vision.
  • Be careful about who you surround yourself with.
  • Go out there and do exactly what you want to do.

Although I can agree with this idea of intentionally surrounding yourself with authentic winners and doing the work necessary to achieve your goals, there’s a giant blind spot in these statements, a black hole that, if you’re not careful, can become an all-consuming idea, turning your focus constantly outward and never inward.

What is the danger in these well-meaning statements? Here it is. Ready? Lean in real close. What happens when no one is around? Who are you when you’re not surrounded by winners?

You see, it’s the quiet moments that can be the loudest.

The person that you are being 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the one person witness to every single thought, the person that must take an honest inventory of those quiet moments and who you are being in the midst of all that you are doing.

Have you ever been to a live sports game inside a huge stadium? It’s impossible not to get pumped up by the noise of the crowd, the vibrations of the seats as the thousands of raving fans stomp, cheer and scream for their favorite athlete. You watch them warm up, strategize and execute the plays that they’ve given countless hours to. All for this moment. All with the same goal. Beat their opponent, win the game. Can you imagine the high those athletes feel after accomplishing their goal? Everything they gave for that moment to happen, it was all worth it. But then what? What happens after the game?

The crowds leave and the stadium lights go dark. The deafening silence kicks in as they head home. No more cheers, no more praise, just them. Alone with their thoughts.

As a visionary entrepreneur, we can relate. We surround ourselves with movers and shakers and doers. It’s exciting, empowering, inspiring. Of course, you get pumped up. How could you not? Whether it’s attending a conference dedicated to your industry, a mastermind surrounded by people that you respect, or a meeting that could change your life, it feels like your dreams are just around the corner. And it’s going to happen today. This is our stadium. This is where we play the game and win. And then you, too, go home.

The dust settles after the high. The waves of momentum pull back. The energy shifts. These are the quiet moments when we run the risk of getting stuck in our own head, where negative thoughts live and destructive thought patterns thrive. It can happen when we’re sitting on the couch, in the shower, brushing our teeth, driving home, or so often, those few moments right before we fall asleep.

The reality is, everyone goes home. The biggest influencers, the most popular celebrities, the richest empire builders, the best athletes. They sit, quiet and stillness surrounding them. And if you don’t train your mind, no matter who you are inside the stadium, these quiet moments can severely impact your game the next time you face an opponent.

I once heard a psychologist say to stop a negative thought, do a quick physical action like snapping your fingers or reaching for something cold. She called it the five-second rule, to switch your destructive thoughts to something that benefits you.

So no matter who you are, what your stadium is, or how many people cheer you on, your mind and the quiet moments you have with yourself will always speak the loudest.
