Your lack of experience, isn’t the problem, your mindset is.

I get it, you’re on the phone with potential clients and they ask you for examples of past work highlighting your experience in their industry. It’s a tough question to combat. But let me ask you, does everyone who lacks experience get stuck at first base, never moving on to book their first client? No, of course not, that would be absurd. Yet, every successful person you look up to started with that first one, so what’s the secret?

The secret is knowing the truth about the question your potential client is actually asking, and to harness the power of your mindset to close the sale. When someone asks to see your past work to verify experience what they’re really asking is, are you capable of delivering what I need? Sure, it sounds different when they phrase it, but at the core of what they want to know, they’re looking for confidence, assurance, and trust that you can give them what they need.

Every client is different. Showing them what you’ve accomplished for someone else’s business with all its unique and moving parts, then comparing it to what you can do on their behalf has many differing variables, as someone expecting person A and person B’s baby to be the exact same merely because they’re both babies. No, what they really want to know can only be answered by a person with the right mindset.

If you don’t believe that you are capable, question your abilities due to a lack of experience, and can’t convince yourself, let alone anyone else that you are right for them, you’ll never get that first one. But if you go about life, whether creating content, engaging leads, or pitching your services on a call with the right mindset, the one that knows there’ll be things to learn along the way but are fully capable of figuring anything out, the one that feels momentum rushing through like a river, the mindset that doesn’t quiver, never backs down, and refuses to take no for an answer, that is the mindset that will close the first sale. It starts with you.

Wherever you go, there you are, so there’s no point in wallowing in self-pity. And honestly, if you don’t believe you have the gumption to pull yourself up, get your mindset right, and conquer your goals regardless of external validation, or perceived limitations, then I can’t help you.
