Mistake number one. Doing your videos without target audience research. You can create many different types of videos. There are animated videos, white board videos, explainers, interviews, slideshows, but how do you know which type to make? By asking your audience.
The problem with most video creators is that they create content in the notion that what they create, the viewers will come. But that’s the wrong assumption.
Don’t make videos for you. Make videos that your users will find valuable. Most brands make the mistake of following the lead of others. Hey, if it works for them, it’ll work for us. Wrong.
Every business or brand has their own set of audiences. And different type of content styles appeal to only a handful of segments and goals.
Before you go on a video production binge, consider reviewing who your audience is. Who are they? What are their motivations? Which platform are they present on? What are they most interested in?

To gain insights into your audience and understand them, start looking at your competitors. Look for clues and learnings. What kind of content do they create? How are people responding to them? Look at how they cross promote their videos, where they share their content. What tone do they use?

Mistake number three. Never used SEO in any form whatsoever. Videos aren’t searchable. Google can’t understand them. Wrong. Google owns YouTube.
So if you can position your videos with proper SEO, it’s going to show up in search results. If you go to Google right now and search how to use Canva, my video comes up in the search results. If you want your video content appearing on the top of Google searches, you need to optimize.
It might look complex, but it’s simple.
Start by encouraging users to stay to watch until the end of your videos. Longer watch times make your content appear more valuable in Google’s eyes.
The more likes, comments, and views you get in the first 24 hours also shows Google that your video holds authority.
You can integrate key words on the title, description and tags. Place custom thumbnails to make your video more effective when being searched.
Lastly, in YouTube video length matters. Be short and sweet enough to hold attention, but not too long that your viewers feel overwhelmed by seeing too long of a video.
